Rota, a leading advocate for active mobility in Malta, is proud to announce a 3 year strategic partnership with Atlas Insurance aimed at advancing active mobility initiatives across the island. Made possible through the Atlas Insurance Community Involvement and Development Fund, this collaboration marks a significant milestone in the promotion of cycling as a viable mode of transportation.
Central to this partnership is the introduction of the first paid Bicycle Ambassador, a key role dedicated to advocating for the benefits of cycling and fostering a culture of safety among riders. Through targeted engagements with schools and businesses, the Bicycle Ambassador will deliver informative sessions on the advantages of cycling and offer essential guidance on navigating Malta’s roadways. Additionally, a series of events, conferences, and innovative initiatives, including bicycle buses, will be organised to enhance mobility options and promote sustainable transportation practices.
The Bicycle Ambassador Project will also focus on the development of cyclotourism opportunities, with plans to establish scenic routes that highlight Malta’s natural beauty and contribute to the growth of the cyclotourism sector.
“We are excited to embark on this collaborative journey with Atlas Insurance,” said Mark Trapani, President of Rota. “With their dedicated support, we can elevate our efforts to ensure that active mobility remains a priority on the national agenda.”
“This project is very much in line with our commitment to promote sustainability and good health,” said Catherine Calleja, Executive Director and Chair of the Atlas Insurance Community Involvement Committee. “Alternative forms of mobility help us align with several key Social Development Goals (SDGs) including Sustainable Cities and Communities, Climate Action, Good Health and Well-Being, and Affordable and Clean Energy. Atlas is thrilled to be working with Rota and Steve to contribute towards these goals.”
The partnership between Rota and Atlas Insurance was marked with a bike ride from Ta’ Xbiex to St. Julian’s and back, that celebrated the start of this promising collaboration while providing TeamAtlas with a hands-on induction into the initiative. Participants included Rota committee members and Atlas staff, accompanied by their families and friends, who availed themselves of the opportunity to cycle in the areas close to their office location and to gain confidence in biking alongside vehicular traffic on the roads.
Leading the ride was renowned cyclist Steve Zammit Lupi, who has been appointed as the inaugural Bicycle Ambassador, bringing a wealth of experience and passion for sustainability to the role. With his help, Rota aims to inspire change and promote cycling as a preferred mode of commuting across the Maltese Islands.
